At my annual wellness check with my gyno, I mention I’m considering sterilization. I had a few general questions, and was mainly wondering if my doctor was willing to perform this procedure on a childless woman in her early 30s. “As long as you’ve made this decision, I don’t believe it’s my job to talk you out of it,” she says. At the time, complete removal of both fallopian tubes, a bilateral salpingectomy, is considered the standard of care, as evidence shows some ovarian cancers start in the tubes. It requires 3 laparoscopic incisions instead of the 2 needed to band or ligate the tubes, and takes 45 minutes instead of 30. This surgery cannot be reversed. She mentions an IUD or arm implant if I’m simply tired of taking daily pills, but I decline. I’m tired of being on hormones. I leave feeling reassured that when I’m ready, I have the option.
